The premise

Here’s the bit.

Floyd Robertson and Earl Camembert sign on for the SCTV AM News, where Floyd gets every earthquake, war and scientific breakthrough while Earl is stuck with a city council vote and a minor fire at a health food store. Fed up, Earl reads a breathless bulletin about a rabies-infected caribou herd just outside town, and Floyd promptly accuses him of making it up. When Floyd hands over the station editorial, Earl sulks that it isn't important, then caves to Floyd's needling and delivers a petty moral jab at a local man instead of the safety message he had prepared. On the evening broadcast Earl finally has a war story to read, only for Floyd to cut in with breaking news that Johnny LaRue has gone on a rampage through the studio.

Highly quotable.

I'll give you an editorial. This guy's living with a girl. He's not even married.

This looks like it's going to be the biggest disaster in show business history.

A little extra

Notes from the archive.

Big News/Little News began on stage in The Second City's 1975 revue Alterations While You Wait, where Eugene Levy and Joe Flaherty also played the two anchors. Split between the AM and PM newscasts of SCTV's debut episode, it marked the first appearance of anchors Floyd Robertson and Earl Camembert.
