The premise

Here’s the bit.

After a triumphant night at the theatre in 1897 London, the admiring Ms. Everly begs Mr. Beckwith to introduce her to the play's mysterious author, known only as the Anomalous Man. Warned not to flinch at his appearance, she meets Peter, a timid and heavily disfigured recluse who expects her to recoil, and instead tells him he is wonderful and asks him to dinner. Unbothered by his ravenous table manners, she takes him into her home, where he packs up his meagre belongings and tells her she has brought light into his life of darkness. One night in bed, though, she catches him hiding a second phone and discovers a stream of lewd messages and photos he has been exchanging with other women on dating apps. When she throws him out he simply notes that they never agreed to be exclusive, and he promptly charms another lady with the very line he once used on her.

Highly quotable.

I've never known the pleasure of a woman's touch before.

You know, we never really said we were exclusive, but OK.

A little extra

Notes from the archive.

Shot in black and white in a boxy 4:3 frame, the film borrows its premise from The Elephant Man.
