The setup
The premise
In a pre-taped parody of Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, Maya Rudolph delays her ride home to take a nostalgic stroll through the SNL halls. Ghostly visions of past performances flicker on the empty stage, a red-jacketed bartender appears at a bar that was never in the studio, and the ghost of a pioneering original-season writer, Gloria Zellwig, explains how she died. The show's cook tells Rudolph that returning hosts have "the shine", the building floods with red wine, twins wait in the hallway, and a bathtub turns out to hold a very much alive Rachel Dratch. After one shine too many, Rudolph says her goodbyes, and the film closes on a 1975 cast photo with her standing in it.

Say it with us
Perm cancer. Worth it.
You see, when you come back as a host, you shine.
Every time I come back to SNL, I never want to leave.
A little extra
Former cast member Rachel Dratch and former head writer Tina Fey made cameo appearances. The film ends by zooming into a 1975 cast photo with Rudolph standing among the original cast, echoing the final shot of The Shining.
