White Christmas
The setup
The premise
Here’s the bit.
Pitched as the next film from the makers of recent Black holiday hits, the trailer follows a mother who loses her house to foreclosure just before Christmas and drags her unwilling son Rashid home to stay with her mother, Mama Ruth. The narrator then runs through everything audiences expect from the genre, only with an all-white cast: friends gossiping while they snap peas, a grandmother who brandishes a handgun, a dinner guest with a chain over his turtleneck, girlfriends at a restaurant warning that men will stray as the waiter looks on, a preacher whipping a choir into a rendition of Oh Happy Day and a leather-clad vocal group dancing for squealing fans. Mock critics weigh in with blurbs ranging from delighted to dismayed, and the closing credits bill Paul Rudd three times over, the last card landing on the bank officer from the opening scene, who wonders whether they are going to get in trouble.
