Telemundo Winter Olympics
The setup
The premise
Here’s the bit.
Hosting Telemundo's first-ever Winter Olympics broadcast, anchors Maria Albaniz and Jorge Cortez cannot understand the appeal of cold, slippery, dangerous sports. Their shivering correspondent at the ski jump reports from somewhere she considers worse than hell, the anchors panic when a jumper seems to fly off an unfinished ramp, and a Canadian Olympic spokesman is pressed on why he has not simply moved somewhere warm. At the curling venue, Hector Lima mourns that the shuffleboard he was promised has turned into sweeping stones across ice, and not even little Jefferson's present can lift his mood.
The funny people
Meet the cast. 6
Say it with us
Highly quotable.
Why does anyone like the Winter Olympics?
I would say that I am in hell, but it is far too cold for that.
This is the madness that happens when a country has no beaches.

And I'm Jorge Cortes. This is the first time Telemundo has ever covered the Winter Olympics, and we keep asking ourselves the same question. Why does anyone like the Winter Olympics? It is cold, and these sports are silly.
- 00:26
Maria Albaniz
It is a mystery to everyone here at Telemundo.
- 00:29
Jorge Cortez
All these sports are on snow or ice. Why would they do this? These are bad, slippery surfaces.
- 00:36
Maria Albaniz
plus all the sports are either very strange or something you would do if you wanted to kill yourself
- 00:41
Jorge Cortez

Jorge Cortez

- 01:54
Rosa Martinez
You will not believe this. The ramp was supposed to be like that.
- 01:58
Jorge Cortez
Que que?
- 01:59
Rosa Martinez
Es loco.
- 02:00
Maria Albaniz
You either finish building a ramp or you do not build it at all.
- 02:03
Jorge Cortez
This is the madness that happens when a country has no beaches.
- 02:10
Jorge Cortez

Ken Franzen

Maria Albaniz
Listen, I do not like these Olympic games.
- 03:05
Jorge Cortez
We go now to our own Hector Lima at the Vancouver Olympic Center with the latest in curling action.
- 03:10
Maria Albaniz
Hola, Hector. What is wrong? You look upset.
- 03:12
Hector Lima
Si. I've been told that curling was like shuffleboard, a sport I like and understand.
- 03:18
Jorge Cortez
Ah, yes, yes, shuffleboard. I know this sport. Yes, I like this. You can play in the short sleeves with the drinks, with the throws.
- 03:23
Hector Lima
I was excited to see it, but I have some very sad news. Apparently a water main has burst and flooded the shuffleboard court.
- 03:30
Maria Albaniz
Madre de Dios!
- 03:32
Hector Lima
And because it's so cold, the entire floor is frozen solid. They've been forced to play shuffleboard with the rocks.
- 03:40
Jorge Cortez
What are they doing?
- 03:41
Hector Lima
I believe these poor men are trying to melt ice with the brooms, a-sweeping and a-sweeping, but it does no good. So sad, so very, very sad.
- 03:51
Maria Albaniz
Well, I think we have a surprise that may cheer you up.
- 03:55
Hector Lima
No, nothing could cheer me up.
- 03:58
Maria Albaniz
Don't look now, Hector, but I think little Jefferson has a present for you.
- 04:02
Hector Lima
No, Jefferson, no, go away. No, now is not the time. Olympic Shuffleboard is ruined. It's tragic.
- 04:10
Maria Albaniz
Ay. Poor Jefferson.
- 04:12
Hector Lima
It's very tragic. Very sad, sad news today from the Olympic Shuffleboard Center.
- 04:16
Jorge Cortez
When we return, more freezing insanity.
- 04:20
Maria Albaniz
I want to go home now.
- 04:21
Jorge Cortez
Yeah, me too.
The rabbit hole continues
One more couldn’t hurt.
