The premise

Here’s the bit.

In this filmed Fuzzy Memories short, a storybook by the fire opens onto Jack Handey's narrated recollection of a childhood Thanksgiving. His parents gather the children to explain that the family store is struggling and there will be no turkey this year, so everyone happily makes do with vegetables, bread and pie. When young Jack later pads into his parents' bedroom in his pajamas to thank them, he finds them secretly tucking into a turkey of their own, and the grown-up Handey quietly revises his verdict on the holiday.

Highly quotable.

I think the best Thanksgiving we ever had was one where we didn't even have a turkey.

Later I went into Mom and Dad's bedroom to thank them, and I caught them eating a little turkey.

I think the best Thanksgiving we ever had was one where we didn't even have a turkey. Mom and Dad sat us kids down and explained that business hadn't been good at Dad's store, so we couldn't afford a turkey. We had vegetables and bread and pie, and it was just fine. Later I went into Mom and Dad's bedroom to thank them, and I caught them eating a little turkey. I guess that wasn't really the best Thanksgiving.
