The premise

Here’s the bit.

In a wood-panelled clubroom, Ken, in khaki uniform and camouflage cap, redraws a whiteboard map of the United States into separate homelands, then keeps surrendering territory whenever a member of his oddly diverse group objects, until there is nowhere left for him. Backed by his devoted friend Reejit, he unveils Operation Hell on Earth, a homemade bomb in a rented van, only to learn that nobody has done their assigned chores. The members then soften the attack step by step, from a recorded boom with biodegradable debris to a Billy Ocean song played after everyone has finished supper. Crushed, Ken decides he is a lousy teacher of hate and walks out, and Reejit rallies the room to go through with the operation in his honour.

Say it with us

Highly quotable.

We'll play Caribbean Queen at 8 o'clock from a rented van.

This ain't a proper hate group. Y'all don't hate nobody.

I may be a good hater, but I sure am a lousy teacher.

A little extra

Notes from the archive.

Also known as Operation Hell on Earth, the line that gave season 2, episode 5 (December 13, 1996) its title. In a 2013 NPR interview, Bob Odenkirk and David Cross discussed the sketch, noting that the group is made up of the very people its leader claims to hate.

The rabbit hole continues

One more couldn’t hurt.
