Marriage Guidance Counsellor
The setup
The premise
Here’s the bit.
Arthur Pewtey brings his glamorous wife Deirdre to a marriage guidance counsellor, who cannot take his eyes off her from the moment they arrive. While Arthur rambles at length about holidays in Brighton, model aeroplanes and his own reputation as a raconteur, the counsellor and Deirdre caress, kiss and slip behind a screen, shedding clothes along the way. Arthur politely holds the counsellor's jacket and agrees to wait outside, where a looming cowboy lectures him about running from himself and urges him to go back in and stand up for himself. Fired up, Arthur storms back to reclaim his wife, is told to go away, meekly accepts it, and is promptly struck on the head with a chicken by a knight in armour.

Highly quotable.
Deeply lyrical and yet tender and frightened like a tiny white rabbit.
Now you go back in there, my son, and be a man.

Notes from the archive.
The sketch was remade for the 1971 film And Now for Something Completely Different, where the voice of God replaces the cowboy and a 16-ton weight replaces the knight with the chicken.
