The premise

Here’s the bit.

A parody of The Blair Witch Project presented as recovered footage from a prime-time news special. Opening text explains that three reporters vanished near Burkittsville, Maryland while taping "The Blair Witch Report," and the tape shows Ted Koppel, Diane Sawyer and Bernard Shaw fleeing through the trees while still tossing to one another in polished broadcast style. As exhaustion sets in they panic, bicker over a map that ended up in a river and record frantic stand-ups, and Sawyer delivers a frightened close-up apology to her networks. By nightfall the anchors can only repeat their own names in the dark before the footage cuts to static.

The funny people

Say it with us

Highly quotable.

We have just disturbed a bloodthirsty demon and are running for our lives.

It wants to kill us, then feast on our organs as we draw our last breath. Sobering news indeed.

I just want to apologize to CNN and ABC. This is all my fault.

A little extra

Notes from the archive.

Aired in the fifth-season premiere on September 25, 1999, a couple of months after The Blair Witch Project became a summer box-office hit.

The rabbit hole continues
