Counterfeit Francs
The setup
The premise
Here’s the bit.
Ricky arrives at a Paris police station to find Lucy under arrest for passing counterfeit money she got from a stranger outside the American Express office. Nobody at the desk speaks English, so the sergeant devises a chain: he questions in French, an officer turns it into German, a drunk prisoner who knows German and Spanish passes it on, and Ricky renders it in English for Lucy. Every question, protest and warning about hard labor has to travel down the line and back, with each link adding its own flourish, until the police decide she can go free once she pays her restaurant bill and the whole relay erupts in celebration.
