The Teenagers' Nativity Play
The setup
The premise
Here’s the bit.
Backstage among the hay bales and cardboard stars of the Hounslow youth centre's nativity, the two self-styled cool teenagers grumble that they are always stuck playing the Wise Men. One of them argues the role is a matter of heritage: turbans, an eastern journey and useless gifts all point to visitors from the Punjab, and the gifts vanishing from the Bible story proves the trio went home and opened the first cash-and-carry. Fired up, his friend sets his sights on playing Joseph opposite the girl cast as Mary, until the play's director reads out the cast list and hands the pair a single, very unglamorous part.
