Behind the running joke
A little backstory.
A serenely self-satisfied guru, modelled on Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, lectures earnest Western seekers on Indian spirituality and offers grave translations of ancient Sanskrit texts that turn out to be English pop-culture gibberish. The character began on the 1996 Radio 4 series; on television his segments include lectures and doorstep visits, beginning with his first symposium in Series 1, Episode 1, where he is played by Sanjeev Bhaskar.
