The premise

Here’s the bit.

A slave struggling to keep up with his ship’s rowing pace is assigned the Oldest Man as a partner. Once chained together, they have trouble finding the right seat, facing the right direction and moving the oar in rhythm. A brief lunch break brings little relief. The Oldest Man reveals a handmade key and proposes an escape, but his partner refuses to take the risk with his release due the next day. The taskmaster discovers the plan and throws the Oldest Man overboard, leaving the other man to realize what their shared chain means for him.
