The premise

Here’s the bit.

At a busy restaurant, Harold surprises his sweetheart with an engagement ring made from a fragment of the Hope Diamond, cheerfully explaining the famous curse attached to the stone. She insists she isn't superstitious, but from the moment the too-tight ring is forced onto her finger, the evening falls apart: a back gives out, fingers get stepped on, a purse refuses to open, hot food spills onto nearby diners and scalding coffee lands in Harold's lap. When Harold finally insists on returning the jinxed ring, the chaos spills across the dining room and ends with a waiter's shish kebab skewer jabbing Harold.

The funny people

Say it with us

Highly quotable.

You see, the ring being as tight as it is sort of serves as a tourniquet.

It sort of gives me a feeling of permanency.

A little extra

Notes from the archive.

Tim Conway appears here as a guest star in the show's first season; he remained a frequent guest until joining the regular cast in 1975.
