You're tuned to the good stuff
Laboratoire Garnier
The setup
The premise
Here’s the bit.
In a gleaming white laboratory, scientist Phillips quietly calls his colleague Peterson over to a microscope: their latest compound appears to shrink the damaged proteins behind Alzheimer's disease, and the whole team gathers around the possible breakthrough. The company-minded Leslie warns them back to their benches just before the tweed-suited, flat-capped Monsieur Garnier arrives. When Phillips nervously explains the discovery, Garnier explodes, reminding his staff that his world-class facility exists solely to invent new shampoos, conditioners and pseudo-scientific product names, and that anyone who wants to change the world can leave. Phillips meekly agrees to stay, and Garnier signs off by pulling off his cap to toss a mane of long, glossy hair like a hair-care advert.

Say it with us
Highly quotable.
This is the Laboratoire, not a UNESCO conference.
And the invention of the word Nutrisse, which sounds like nutrition but doesn't guarantee it, is one of the best things you've ever come up with.
You can change the world with Garnier Body Cocoon and Soft Curl Cream.

Phillips
Peterson, come over here, quick. Peterson, psst! Come over here. Shh.
- 00:07
Peterson
Phillips, I'm busy.
- 00:08
Phillips
This is important. Really important.
- 00:10
Peterson ?
All right, but make it quick.
- 00:14
Phillips ?
Come here.
- 00:20
Peterson ?
Is that what I think it is?
- 00:21
Phillips
That's the effect of PWT4 on advanced amyloid proteins on the affected brain tissue. A significant shrinkage.
- 00:27
Peterson ?
A cure for Alzheimer's?
- 00:29
Phillips
It... It could be.
- 00:32
Phillips ?
Everyone, we could be on the brink of a massive breakthrough. Colin, guard the door.
- 00:36
Leslie
Stop it, you lot. Get back to your workstations. Monsieur Garnier will be furious if he sees what you've done.
- 00:41
Phillips ?
Be quiet, Leslie. This is exactly why I got into science in the first place.
- 00:45
Leslie ?
He's coming.
- 00:45
Monsieur Garnier ?
Morning,
- 00:50
Good morning, Monsieur Garnier.
- 00:54
Monsieur Garnier
Well, what the hell's going on here? Why are you scientists away from your places? This is the Laboratoire, not a UNESCO conference.
- 01:04
Leslie ?
Sorry, Monsieur Garnier.
- 01:06
Monsieur Garnier
And, Phillips, what have we got here? I hope for your sake it's something new for the Garnier Fructis range.
- 01:16
Phillips
It isn't, Monsieur Garnier. It's, um...
- 01:19
Monsieur Garnier ?
What's that, Philip?
- 01:21
Phillips
It... It isn't, Monsieur Garnier. It's... It's a potential cure for Alzheimer's and...
- 01:28
Monsieur Garnier ?
I get it I get it
- 01:38
Monsieur Garnier
Now listen Scientist! And listen good! This is my laboratory! And what I say goes! I don't want you lot wasting your time with medicines and whatnot! We went through that with Peterson and his perpetual motion device! I ASK YOU, DOES PERPETUAL MOTION ADD ANYTHING TO THE GARNIER SLEEK AND SHINE SERIES? WELL... NO SLEEK AND SHINE SERIES. NOW, WHAT DO WE WANT?
- 02:08
Leslie
NEW PRODUCTS IN THE NUTRISE COLLECTION.
- 02:10
Monsieur Garnier
BANG ON, LESLIE. AND THE INVENTION OF THE WORD NUTRISE, WHICH SOUNDS LIKE NUTRITION BUT DOESN'T GUARANTEE IT, IS ONE OF THE BEST THINGS YOU'VE EVER COME UP WITH.
- 02:20
Phillips
BUT, MR. GARNIER, WE'RE SCIENTISTS. WE NEED TO CHANGE THE WORLD. You've got the best scientific equipment money can buy. You employ 3,000 research staff. We've created 521 patents. This is the finest laboratoire in the Western Hemisphere. Surely we can...
- 02:39
Monsieur Garnier
You can change the world with Garnier body cocoon and soft curl cream. And if you can't take that, you know where the exit door to the laboratoire is.
- 02:51
Phillips
Yes, Monsieur Garnier.
- 02:54
Monsieur Garnier
So, Phillips, are you staying or are you going?
- 03:01
Phillips
I'm staying, Monsieur Connie.
- 03:12
Monsieur Garnier ?
Take care.
