There is No God
The setup
The premise
Here’s the bit.
A man slicing a watermelon in his kitchen finds the flesh marked with the words "There is no God" and calls Helen in to witness the proof. Soon a TV news reporter is covering the crowds of atheists queuing outside the house for a glimpse of the miraculous fruit. One onlooker explains that the melon has finished off a faith that had rested on a tomato bearing the initials JC, until the reporter points out a third letter turning it into JCB. The Reverend Steven Murray is then brought on to give the Church's response: he insists people are just projecting meaning onto random patterns in fruit, but each argument he reaches for, from the world's suffering to random genetic mutation, ends up making the atheists' case for them.

Say it with us
Highly quotable.
This melon blows my tomato out of the water. I mean, it's a full sentence.
Like the fruit says, there is no God.
Well, it's probably just some random mutation in the watermelon's genetics. Oh, no, wait. Not that!

Atheists from around the world are converging here and queuing for hours just for a glimpse of the miraculous fruit section Let's see if we can talk to one of them Can you tell us what you've seen?

News Reporter

News Reporter
Oh, it looks like there's a B there as well. It says JCB.

Disillusioned Man
Oh, yeah. Well, that doesn't matter now, does it? This melon blows my tomato out of the water. I mean, it's a full sentence. There's punctuation in everything. No, that's good enough for me. Like the fruit says, there is no God.

News Reporter
and joining us now is reverend stephen murray so reverend what's the church's take on this is god done for
- 01:18
Reverend Steven Murray
no obviously there is a god and he's fine this is just typical silly atheists getting carried away they look at a random pattern in a piece of fruit and think they found some message in it
- 01:27
News Reporter
so it's meaningless
- 01:29
Reverend Steven Murray
absolutely there are a million atheists who've cut open pieces of fruit today and found no such message just the tasty flesh and seeds that God put there for them to enjoy this particular atheist happens to have found a piece of fruit that happens to resemble writing and he's projected his own meaning onto it it's ridiculous I mean you could equally say look at all the horrible suffering in the world and say that that proves that there's no God
- 01:49
News Reporter
that's a good point so how do you explain the message
- 01:52
Reverend Steven Murray
well it's probably just some random mutation in the watermelon's genetics oh no wait not that
The rabbit hole continues
One more couldn’t hurt.
