The setup

The premise

Here’s the bit.

Liam has asked his friends Steve and Tara to host a dinner party so he can impress Jill, and they assure him the other guests have been chosen to make him look good. The final guest is Scarecrow, an old friend of Tara's from back home, who comes down in full straw and soon wins Jill over with talk of art and travel. Liam drags Steve into the kitchen to complain and is told to stop sulking and compete, but his boasts about his marketing salary fall flat against the scarecrow's lyrical account of watching over the valley at night. Jill begs Scarecrow to perform an enchanted scarecrow's trick of calling down the moonlight and to read from his slim volume of verse, then leaves with him for a night-time drive to see the valley. On his way out, Scarecrow thanks the hosts for arranging the evening for him and for picking such a hopeless rival, and says goodbye to Dave, the crash-test dummy who has sat silently at the table all night.

Say it with us

Highly quotable.

Liam, if you can't do better than a man with a family of rats living in his torso, then there's no hope for you with any woman.

So, Scarecrow, tell me, how much does scaring crows pay?

There are two types of scarecrow. There are the ordinary scarecrows, and then there's the enchanted kind.
