The Honeymoon's Over: Waiter
The setup
The premise
Here’s the bit.
Henry and his girlfriend are congratulating themselves on how easygoing restaurants have become when their tuxedoed waiter recoils at Henry's casual request for a bottle of house red and demands to know whether he is qualified to order wine at all. Asked what happened to the cheerful Australian waitress, the waiter announces that the old guard of incredibly posh waiters has returned and the rules have changed. He reveals that the kitchen staff watched the couple's clumsy soup-eating on the monitors the week before, then wheels over a trolley of obscure cutlery and serves dishes that can apparently only be eaten with exactly the right implement, sneering as the pair fumble and try to swap tools. When Henry asks for the manager, the waiter catalogues his shortcomings in grooming and table manners and orders him and his silent girlfriend out of the restaurant.

Say it with us
Highly quotable.
Do you even know what the house red is?
We were watching you on the monitors in the kitchen. And we all thought you were a dick.
Now take your gaudy but gratifyingly mute girlfriend, and get out.

Notes from the archive.
This is the first installment of the recurring "The Honeymoon's Over" format, in which David Mitchell plays an imperious member of staff who announces that the friendly modern service has ended; IMDb's episode credits name his character the "Incredibly Posh Waiter".

One more couldn’t hurt.
