The premise

Here’s the bit.

Kevin Nealon announces that every Thanksgiving a different cast member will write and perform an original song for the holiday, and he hands the first turn to Adam Sandler. Promising to be entertaining and a little moving, Sandler strums an acoustic guitar and opens with a slow, repetitive chant about loving turkey. The verses that follow keep returning to the dinner table but rhyme their way into unrelated asides about old movie stars, Elvis fans, a sitcom catchphrase, a baseball trade, a boxing scandal and a childhood summer camp, drawing groans and laughter from the audience. Midway through, Sandler talks a reluctant Nealon into singing a verse with him, then stretches the final note of his holiday wish before Nealon thanks him and signs off.

A little extra

Notes from the archive.

Adam Sandler wrote the song with Robert Smigel and Ian Maxtone-Graham. Nealon introduced it as the start of a yearly tradition in which a different cast member would sing, but Sandler returned the next Thanksgiving with a new version in the style of Bruce Springsteen. A live recording of the song appeared on Sandler's 1993 debut album, They're All Gonna Laugh at You!

Tonight, we start what we hope will become a weekend update tradition. Every Thanksgiving from now on, a different SNL performer will compose and sing an original song to commemorate the holiday. We couldn't think of a better person to begin this tradition than our own Adam Sandler.
