Obama College Years
The setup
The premise
Here’s the bit.
Home-video footage stamped March 15, 1980 shows a young Barack Obama in a dorm room hung with a Hawaii flag, already speaking in his measured, uplifting cadence as he tells his classmates that tonight's party could be a model for how the world should work, all while peppering the speech with period slang about being stoked, righteous and gnarly. He warns his friend Dennis, who is shooting the tape, to be careful because he might run for office someday, deftly snags a joint as it is passed around, and lays out his vision of a welcoming, diverse guest list. Later, sitting at a table, he gives a step-by-step lesson in rolling a joint as if it were a civics class, casting the rolling paper as the Constitution and the weed as the American people who must stay close together. By the end he is thoroughly stoned, laughing at how high he is and losing track of what he was saying.
