The premise

Here’s the bit.

After a narrated recap, the serial's second instalment moves to Great Bartlings, the country seat of Lady Penelope Berkley Hunt, seventh in line to the throne, who spends her evening trading insults and innuendo with her hulking pantryman James before the bedtime candle goes out. In the darkness the cloaked Phantom slips into her bedchamber, and his raspberry leaves her ladyship with snow-white hair and a soot-black face. Her private police force questions suspicious characters in the grounds to no effect, while back at Scotland Yard Inspector Corner and Sergeant Bowles review the case largely in rhyming couplets and conclude that jealousy is the motive, so they need someone who fancies both a tall brunette and a big fat man. The police set off in completely the wrong direction, and question time in the Commons, where Disraeli faces a heckling opposition, descends into a schoolboy riddle just before the Phantom strikes again.

The funny people

Say it with us

Highly quotable.

Lady Penelope: Has anyone ever told you that you are very attractive, James? James: No, milady. Lady Penelope: I'm not surprised. You're repulsive.

Once again, the great British police force relentlessly pursued their prey in completely the wrong direction.

A little extra

Notes from the archive.

Lady Penelope is played by Janet Webb, best known as "the lady who comes on at the end" of The Morecambe & Wise Show, where she would sweep on to take the closing bows as if the whole programme had been hers.
