The premise

Here’s the bit.

The investigative programme Issues Now meets Gary Chapple, whose routine hip operation left him with a rubber squeaker inside his hip after a surgeon accepted a dare, and Dorothy Portman, who spent five years with a fizzing sherbet capsule in her bladder. Surgeon Jeremy Peters denies everything when confronted, then struggles to keep his composure behind a handkerchief. Dr Eric Bridgeman of a surgical ethics group catalogues ever more outrageous operating-theatre pranks and blames a laddish new culture among surgeons, while Gary is left waiting for the rubber to perish.

Say it with us

Highly quotable.

No, it's not a mistake. It's a squeaker.

No, more of a tickle.

They know what they're doing, they know that it's wrong, and that's where they get their kick.

Behind the scenes
