Star-Crossed Lovers

Sitting on a stone staircase, a narrator recalls a relationship he wanted to regard as a doomed romance. He tries to stir up opposition among his friends, only to find that they and his girlfriend’s father approve of the match. The ordinary pleasures of being a couple seem grand to him, until a breakup leaves him imagining a much slower and less heroic form of heartbreak.
