Synopsis

Ellen is quietly enjoying a slice of a colleague's birthday chocolate fudge cake at her desk when Kate, who sits beside her, starts circling it. Kate announces she is cutting down and refuses a piece, then fishes for praise about her week of strict dieting until she demands that Ellen guess how much weight she has lost. Ellen tries to dodge the question, but every figure she eventually offers is wrong in a new way: her first guess is scoffed at as absurd for a single week, her next would apparently require a tropical illness, and as the guesses shrink Kate grows ever more indignant. When the real loss turns out to be smaller than any of them, Ellen's polite encouragement is the last straw, and Kate grabs the cake and crams it into her mouth.
