The premise

Here’s the bit.

At the piano in their usual bar, Pudge and Solomon swap wisecracks about newspaper stories on Reagan's missile plans and Ted Kennedy's political future. Solomon's joking manner hides the news that the plant has laid him off. Pudge offers the contents of his tip jar, but Solomon resists depending on a friend's charity. He finally seems to accept the cash, then quietly puts it back before leaving his friend at the piano.
