Bret
Bret McKenzie • Cast
It was a hilarious moment in a very bleak, bleak time of my life.
How come it looks so much like my arm, which has been hacked off at the elbow last night? Oh, it's an arm fish.
All that was left of me was my head. No, not dead, just a head.
Unable to sleep in a room crowded with model ships and seascapes, Bret drifts into a dream in which his bed becomes a dark, rolling ocean. Now a sailor, he sings a mournful folk ballad about being lost at sea with his shipmates Petrov and Yelyena, played by Doug and Mel. When food runs out, his companions politely offer him last requests, and each party he asks for ends with Bret waking up short another limb while Petrov looks oddly well fed. Bret finally takes revenge by dosing himself with arsenic so his flesh will poison them, leaving him the last survivor: a lonely head among the bones.
From the series finale, "Evicted". The version in the episode is faster and has fewer verses than the original recording on the duo's live album Folk the World Tour.
