Captain Cook: "Fix my boat, bro."
Kalaniʻōpuʻu: "Here's the sack of James Cook. No hard feelings."

Synopsis

Narrator Jonah Ray, a Hawaii native, works his way through the 1779 encounter between the Hawaiian chief Kalaniʻōpuʻu and the British explorer James Cook as Derek Waters keeps the drinks coming. In the reenactment, Eugene Cordero's king welcomes Ken Marino's Cook and his crew during a festival season, and a language barrier convinces the British that they are being treated as gods. The visitors overstay their welcome by eating everything and contributing nothing, leave, then limp back with a broken ship and start making demands. After a theft and an attempt to take the king hostage, the standoff turns violent and Cook is killed, before the king calms everyone down and returns part of Cook's remains to his men with surprising politeness. Ray's narration drifts through tangents, giggles and a voicemail from his dad while the actors lip-sync every word.

Notes

One of three retellings in the season 2 episode "Hawaii," alongside stories about Daniel Inouye and Eddie Aikau. Narrator Jonah Ray was born in Kailua, Hawaii.
