Wake of the Week
The setup
The premise
Here’s the bit.
An elderly couple thumbs for a lift along a country road while, at the funeral home, a woman in a leopard-print coat and an older relative fuss over the body, praise the undertaker's handiwork and marvel that the same business runs the wedding hall and the ambulance. The younger woman even wants a picture of her mother beside the casket. Then the sons gather: Jimmy, poured off a plane and very drunk, wants one last talk with a father he never knew, and his brothers remember a man who was generous only when he had been drinking. A rosary is organised to restore some dignity, but Tommy forgets the prayer, swears, and turns on his brothers, and soon all three are grappling on the floor while the women shriek and one son concludes that none of them is as much of a man as their mother. By the time the hitchhiking couple, Cass and Roly, finally arrive, the fight has spilled into the parking lot, and the old women hurry off to catch the rest, promising another wake next week.
