Synopsis

Lenny brings Jim, a colleague, to meet his old friend Nick at the pub, and the small talk about spotting a film director's bodyguards outside seems innocent enough. Nick sees it differently: he quietly asks whether that was a jab at him being single, then threatens violence if it happens again. When Lenny coaxes Jim into telling a story about kids kicking a drinks can around on a train, Nick pieces together an elaborate chain of logic proving the anecdote is yet another insult about his marital status. After a menacing stare and a blast of a wedding singalong on the soundtrack, the rattled Jim decides he would rather leave. Even alone afterwards, Nick overhears two women laughing across the room and leans in with the same suspicion.

Notes

The same bachelor touchiness returns in Big Train's second-series third episode, when a man asked to keep an eye on a stranger's baby takes offence at a question about why he hasn't got a wife.
