The setup
The premise
Standing before a television screen in the cafe, Broden lectures Zach and Mark on the 1967 disappearance of Australian prime minister Harold Holt. His first explanation involves whales, a secret immortality technology hidden in polymer banknotes, and the long-dead figures printed on Australia's money, who supposedly silenced Holt when he tried to make the discovery public. When his friends' snickering earns them their own insulting slides, Broden abandons that story for the 'real' one: a stray torpedo carried Holt to New York, where a dousing in ooze turned him into a crime-fighting mutant alongside a rat and four turtles. Unimpressed, Zach asks whether he worked all of this out on a trip to the lolly shop, and Broden collapses into sobbing self-pity, which his friends are happy to confirm.

A little extra
Harold Holt was Australia's prime minister when he disappeared while swimming at Cheviot Beach, Victoria, in December 1967. His body was never recovered, and the disappearance has inspired numerous conspiracy theories.
