The premise

Here’s the bit.

Judge Zach warns that he will bang his gavel unless the defence finds a barrister within two minutes, and a sunglasses-wearing Rake sweeps into the cafe courtroom to represent the balaclava-clad Blueberry Burglar, who rates him well above Mark, his previous lawyer. Prosecutor Broden objects for the record that Rake is an ABC series whose lead character, Cleaver Greene, is played by Richard Roxburgh, but the newcomer simply insists that he is Rake. The gallery is starstruck, and Zach forgives Rake's wink while scolding Broden for winking back. Broden's complaint that characters from other shows cannot wander into the courtroom turns into a show of hands on who has watched Rake and a muddle over Roxburgh's villain role in Mission: Impossible 2, until Rake again declares himself Rake. Called to the bench, Zach and Broden admit they are struggling with the scene; Zach says he only took the judge role hoping to bring some gravitas as an actor. They briefly weigh a retrial before agreeing that the show is unlikely to be back for a second season.

Say it with us

Highly quotable.

Your Honour, let the record show that Rake is a TV show on the ABC and the character is called Cleaver Greene and that character is played by Richard Roxburgh.

But let the record also show that I am Rake.

Yeah, but it's cute when Rake does it.

A little extra

Notes from the archive.

Zachary Ruane told Concrete Playground that the group wrote the Rake joke expecting Richard Roxburgh to say no, and that it needed sign-off from Rake's creator, the ABC and Roxburgh himself before it could be filmed.

The rabbit hole continues

One more couldn’t hurt.
