Four Earth space explorers (Steve Carell, Beck Bennett, Cecily Strong, Leslie Jones) prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving with their alien hosts, the Klergs (Kenan Thompson, Melissa Villaseñor). The Klergs serve them "kern," which appears to be purple ears of corn. However, the explorers soon discover that the kern (Pete Davidson) is actually a sentient, screaming creature, and the Klergs are trying to wipe out the kern species. The Earth travelers attempt to save the kern, but the sketch famously fell apart due to multiple technical difficulties during the live broadcast—including a crucial prop (laser gun) falling early in the sketch and digital effects failing on Pete Davidson at the end. The cast eventually abandoned the planned ending and improvised their way out.

This sketch is notorious for being one of SNL's most memorable technical disasters. During the live broadcast: 1) A crucial prop (laser gun) fell to the floor at 0:13; 2) Cast members began breaking character early; 3) Steve Carell improvised at 2:18, changing his scripted "hell no" to "hell yes"; 4) The digital effects on Pete Davidson failed at 2:35; 5) The cast abandoned the planned ending and improvised. The uploaded YouTube version was edited to fix the Pete Davidson digital effects glitch. Despite (or perhaps because of) all the problems, the sketch has become a fan favorite for showcasing SNL's live television unpredictability. Duration: 186 seconds. Views: 1.7M+. Likes: 14,941+.
