I wish it was Christmas today!

In this musical sketch, four Saturday Night Live cast members deliver an endearingly lo-fi performance of an original holiday song. Horatio Sanz plays a tiny backpacker guitar while singing, Jimmy Fallon mans a 1980s keyboard, Chris Kattan holds the keyboard while doing his signature rhythmic head movements, and Tracy Morgan wordlessly dances alongside them with a straight face and light jogging-style moves. The quartet, all dressed in matching maroon sweaters, perform the simple yet irresistibly catchy tune "I Wish It Was Christmas Today" with minimal lyrics and maximum charm. The sketch's innocent simplicity and the cast's visible enjoyment made it an instant hit that was repeated just one week later and became a beloved SNL holiday tradition.

The song was written around 2 a.m. at the SNL offices by Horatio Sanz and Jimmy Fallon using a backpacker guitar (a tiny travel guitar) and a 1980s keyboard with pre-recorded drum beats. Fallon initially didn't think they had written anything usable, but Sanz submitted it and it became a massive hit. Tracy Morgan wasn't given any specific direction - his entire dance routine was improvised. Julian Casablancas (The Strokes) released a punk rock version as a bonus track on his 2009 album "Phrazes For The Young". The sketch was performed on non-Christmas holidays including Memorial Day and Easter with modified lyrics. Jimmy Fallon released his first holiday album "Holiday Seasoning" in 2024, citing his love of Christmas music.
