Excuse me, do you speak English?
No, sorry, we don't speak English.
I'm sorry, I don't speak English.

In this absurdist sketch from the first episode of Big Train, an English woman approaches two Frenchmen on a street in France asking for directions. Despite her question being posed in English, the two men respond—also in perfect English with British accents—that they cannot understand her because they do not speak English. The sketch plays on the absurdity of the language barrier trope, with the Frenchmen claiming ignorance of English while demonstrating complete fluency in it. The surreal humor comes from the deliberate illogic of the situation, a hallmark of Big Train's comedic style.

Aired on November 9, 1998. Sketch duration: approximately 88 seconds. First sketch in Episode 1 of Big Train. The show won Best Broken Comedy Show at the British Comedy Awards in 1999.
