In their debut appearance, the Hedley family demonstrates their extreme work ethic at home. The family patriarch works multiple jobs simultaneously, coming home only to take off one uniform and put on another for his next job. Their son Byron has just been fired from the hotel but is currently in ten bands. Their daughter Margaret falls in love with a man who has only one job—which the family finds absolutely appalling. The sketch humorously depicts the family's over-the-top dedication to working, with each family member juggling numerous careers and viewing anyone with fewer than two jobs as lazy. The sketches typically end with the family breaking the fourth wall and yelling to viewers "Hey mon, got to go to work!" as calypso music plays.
The character had a prominent Jamaican/British West Indian accent. Family members would wear multiple uniforms representing their various jobs. The son Byron wore traditional dreadlocks and was considered the "lazy" one. Some sketches showed the family owning their own business (hospital, airline, etc.) where all responsibilities were filled by family members. The sketch resonated with many viewers who saw it as both comedy and commentary on immigrant work ethic. Kim Wayans was noted in comments as having one of the most authentic Caribbean accents among the cast.
