Megaphone Crooners (Monsters of Megaphone)

youtube.com

A brilliant parody of early 20th century music documentaries featuring two rival "megaphone crooners" - Dickie Crickets and Kid Jersey. The sketch satirizes music rivalry documentaries and nostalgia programming through a mockumentary format. Dickie Crickets sings futuristic songs about things that haven't been invented yet (like "Aeroplane," "Electric Sports Bra," "Time Machine," and "Counterfeit Money Machine") while Kid Jersey becomes more popular by coining the phrase "thank you" and being polite. The sketch escalates absurdly when federal agents arrest Dickie for his "Counterfeit Money Machine" song. The documentary format features deadpan interviews with people who knew the crooners, perfectly capturing the style of actual music history documentaries. Bob Odenkirk and David Cross deliver excellent performances as the rival crooners, with Tom Kenny providing hilarious commentary as an interviewer/narrator.

According to Bob Odenkirk on the DVD commentary, he got the idea from watching a documentary on TV about Al Jolson where people who worked with Jolson thought he was talented but hated him personally. One of the most beloved Mr. Show sketches by fans.

Megaphone crooning, or as we called it, megaphone crooning

Electric sports bra, electric sports bra, baby lights up when she... sorry! Sorry!
Penicillinnnn, baby loves my penicillin, baby's WELL because of my penicillin, takes it all day loooong...... thank you.
People didn't want to hear songs about things that haven't even been invented yet.
The kid was so polite, he coined the phrase 'thank you', people say it all the time now.
