Lucy desperately wants to appear on Ricky's television show, but he refuses to let her do a commercial spot. Undeterred, Lucy goes behind Ricky's back and poses as "Lucille McGillicuddy" to land the role of spokeswoman for Vitameatavegamin, a health tonic. During rehearsals at the TV studio, Lucy repeatedly samples the product, unaware that it contains 23% alcohol. As she does take after take, she becomes progressively more intoxicated, slurring her words and stumbling through the commercial script.
