The Escape Artist

youtube.com

A mockumentary-style sketch that tells the life story of Cyril St. John "The Escapist", a vaudeville entertainer who spent his entire career trapped in a straitjacket. The sketch follows his journey from the 1930s through his death in 1976, including his modest beginnings escaping from wet paper bags, his failed attempt at a major stunt at City Hall where he remained hanging for weeks, his military service during WWII (still in the straitjacket), his 1950s TV sitcom "Fit to be Tied", unsuccessful films, institutionalization, and his final Carnegie Hall performance. The sketch is presented as a documentary with interviews and historical footage chronicling the tragic-comic life of a performer who could escape everything except his own straitjacket.
