Mr. Garvey is a pugnacious and volatile former inner city teacher of twenty years who becomes a substitute teacher assigned to a predominantly white biology class. While taking attendance, he mispronounces each student's name in exaggerated ways, including Jacqueline as "Jay Quellin", Blake as "Balakay", Denise as "Dee-nice", and Aaron as "A-A-Ron". Each student corrects him, but Garvey refuses to accept their pronunciations and becomes progressively more agitated.
