Great White North was a recurring segment on SCTV featuring Bob and Doug McKenzie, two stereotypical Canadian "hosers" played by Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas. The segments were created satirically to fulfill Canadian content requirements mandated by the CRTC. All segments were completely improvised with no script, featuring the brothers in a low-budget basement set drinking beer and discussing everyday Canadian life. The characters became cultural icons and spawned an album and the 1983 film Strange Brew.
